Acclaimed pianist and composer Helen Sung’s desire to write for larger ensembles received a high-octane boost when she had the opportunity to arrange a piece for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) in 2016. Since then, she has honed her craft at the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, winning the 2022 BMI Charlie Parker Prize for big band composition. Receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2021 afforded her the chance to create Portraits in Jazz, a suite of big band musical tributes to the jazz masters she studied with at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance (now the Herbie Hancock Institute). Sung will unveil her large ensemble, Big Band & Beyond, for WP’s Summer Jazz Room closing concert, presenting selections from Portraits in Jazz and more, including the JLCO arrangement that started it all.
Admission: Public, Seniors, WP Community & Non-WP students -$10.
WP Students may have (1) one free ticket with valid ID on show night.
A discounted weeklong Jazz Pass to all five concerts (July 17-21) is available - $40.
To get the Jazz Pass discount you must purchase (1) one ticket to each of the (5) five performances at the same time. Jazz Pass is on sale through Thursday July 15 and only available by calling, or visiting the Box Office. They are not available at the door.
Additional discounts may be available by calling the Box Office.
There is a $4 per order fee for all sales not made in person at the Box Office.
Advanced purchase is advised. A $5 per ticket fee will be charged on day of show at the Box Office.
Summer Box Office hours: Monday 10am - 2pm; Tuesday and Wednesday 10am - 5pm; Thursday varied hours and Friday closed.
Discounts are limited to a maximum of 2 tickets. All additional tickets will be at the full public price.
