Nortonk: Gideon Forbes (WP MM ’18), saxophone; Tom Killackey (WP ’19), trumpet; Stephen Pale (WP ’19), bass; Steven Crammer (WP ’18), drums.
Nortonk is a chordless jazz quartet, an instrumentation with a long jazz legacy from the Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker Quartet to more modern groups led by Mark Turner and Chris Speed. The band is a wonderful combination of precise arrangements, serpentine melodic lines, and more open improvisation. Its members are all recent WP alumni who first worked together as a concept group in the Jazz Program, with longtime faculty member Kevin Norton. This concert will showcase original compositions by each of the band members. The group is a collaborative ensemble, and has helped to launch the careers of these four musicians.
