The “saxophone battle” is a long tradition in jazz – this concert will be not so much a battle as an energized meeting of two great purveyors of the great post-bop tradition, both with deep William Paterson connections. Vincent Herring has been a member of the WP Jazz faculty since 2006, profoundly affected by the great sound of Cannonball Adderley and a veteran of bands led by Lionel Hampton, Nat Adderley, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton and many others.  Eric Alexander is among the best-known alumni of the WP Jazz program, is a mainstay in New York jazz clubs and in festivals worldwide, is an ongoing collaborator with his former teacher and mentor, pianist Harold Mabern, and has appeared on over 90 CDs as a guest artist.  Both Herring and Alexander have a long list of recordings as individual leaders.
